Learning Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast the different types of wood decay and their impacts on tree structure and stability.
  • Explain how wood decay fungi infect and affect tree physiology and structural integrity.
  • Identify at least five common wood decay fungi based on their key identification characteristics and signs of infection.
  • Recognize the potential hazards associated with trees infected by various decay fungi to improve worker and public safety.
  • Apply knowledge of decay types and fungal identification to assess tree risk and inform management decisions.

Course Description:

Wood decay or wood rots are fungal pathogens that can have a negative effect on humans as well as trees. When wood decay fungi attack, the infection can compromise the stability of a tree as well as the health. This results in a potentially hazardous tree that can be dangerous to those working on it or those near it. Since there are many wood decay fungi of varying virulence, proper identification is necessary to understanding the risk to the tree and worker. This presentation aims to explain identification characteristics of common wood decay fungi and recognize the potential dangers associated with each.
